In Gorakhpur, the Municipal Corporation is launching a tree plantation campaign to combat urban pollution. This initiative falls under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and will cost the government Rs 75 crore. The campaign will cover five districts.
Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Singh Sogarwal announced that approximately 40,000 square metres will be planted on the Domingarh-Mahesara overbridge, a key route to Nepal. Similarly, around 25,000 square metres will be planted on the Transport Nagar to Dominar road.
The green forest area will span 11,800 square metres from Ekla Dam to Bypass Road, 1,280 square metres on Naushad Chowk to Baghagada Road (Varanasi route), 30,231 square metres on Transport Nagar to Deoria Bypass Road and 162,602 square metres including Miyabaki Forest in Mahesara.
The Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation covers a 30-kilometre radius. This effort aims to reduce pollution like PM-10 and PM-25 and improve commuting. It will also develop dense forests quickly, absorbing carbon dioxide and increasing oxygen levels. Children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions will benefit directly. Additionally, traffic management will be improved by modernising four intersections for Rs five crore, easing congestion and speeding up travel.
Pollution measuring instruments will be installed at three locations in Golghar for Rs 50 lakh to monitor air quality. Air pollution control devices will also be installed to prevent pollution from crematoriums.
The city-level implementation committee has approved the action plan for the National Clean Air Programme. Work will commence soon.
