In Gorakhpur, on February 1, 30 patients underwent cataract surgery at New Rajesh Hitech Hospital in Jaddupatti, Sikriganj. However, after the operation, 19 patients exhibited severe pain, swelling, pus discharge from the eye and blurred vision. This news was published in Jagran on February 4 prompting the health department to seal the operating theatre and collect samples. Consequently, 17 patients were admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. As of now, eight patients have been discharged.
In response to the incident, the District Magistrate convened an inquiry committee on Thursday. The committee was chaired by the Additional District Magistrate (Administration) and included ACMO Dr. N. L. Kushwaha, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at BRD Medical College, and Dr. Pankaj Soni, Ophthalmic Surgeon at District Hospital. Anjani Kumar Gupta was also present. The District Magistrate assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible.

After his condition worsened, Jairam was admitted to AIIMS on Thursday. The families allege that proper treatment and monitoring were inadequate, leading to the infection’s escalation and the loss of his eyesight.
