A long-standing drain construction project at Nakhas intersection in Gorakhpur has stalled. While one side is progressing the other remains unfinished. Simultaneous work on both sides has narrowed the road severely impacting traffic flow. Damaged sewer lines have caused dirty water to spill onto the road resulting in mud and water accumulation. This has led to daily falls particularly among two-wheeler riders pedestrians women and the elderly. Around 10 to 12 people are injured each morning and evening. Schoolchildren and office workers are particularly affected.
On Thursday around 10:30 pm a 70-year-old cyclist named Kamrulhoda was tragically hit by a dumper engaged in widening work at Nakhas Chowk in Kotwali police station area. They are residents of Miyan Bazar. The dumper reportedly lost control and collided with the bicycle causing the elderly man to fall and sustain serious head and body injuries. Police quickly arrived at the scene and admitted him to the BRD Medical College and Hospital.
The incident has sparked controversy with discussions about the heritage corridor project ongoing across the city. The business community is eager for the project’s completion to improve the area’s appearance and boost business. However frustration is mounting among traders due to the contractors’ sluggish and unorganised work style. Local shopkeepers report customers avoiding the market due to fear of mud and traffic congestion which directly impacts employment. They argue that if the work were to be carried out continuously with traffic temporarily diverted the project could be completed on time. However the ongoing traffic congestion is worsening the road’s condition.
